Summary

Named one of the Best Books of 2024 by the Chicago Public Library!

In this sequel to The Darkness Outside Us, a Stonewall Honor Book, New York Times bestselling author Eliot Schrefer delivers another ambitious, genre-bending novel and epic love story that spans thousands of years and the far reaches of the galaxy.

Seventeen years have gone by since the Coordinated Endeavor crashed on a distant exoplanet. Ambrose Cusk and Kodiak Celius are now the devoted parents of two teenage children, Owl and Yarrow, in a hardscrabble frontier home. Though life on Minerva is full of danger, the family’s bond is enough to make it all worth it—until they learn that the biggest threat to their survival might come from within.

More than thirty thousand years in the past, Ambrose wakes on Earth to find that his mission to save his sister was a ruse. His mother betrayed him, and the cruelty of her true plans sets Ambrose spiraling. When he discovers that another spacefarer is suffering his same fate, he will have to decide whether to risk crossing a world at war to reach him.

Separated by time and space, a young family and two strangers learn that their lives are intimately intertwined. They race to uncover the unexpected connections that might save them all . . . and perhaps humanity as well.

If I could, I would give this book six stars. It is, without exaggeration, the most beautiful sequel I have ever read a perfect continuation with narration as strong as its predecessor. The dread in these pages is palpable and persistent, refusing to leave even when hope flickers in and out. The story is about beginnings and endings, and it is difficult to say much more without spoiling the experience for others.

Reading this sequel was an emotional journey. I loved discovering new perspectives as the story unfolded. Nostalgia hit me in the subtle references to Ambrose and Kodiak from Book 1, reminding me how much of that books are linked.

I was slightly disappointed with the ending, as I felt that we were given a cliffhanger and there was no resolve, I hope we get another book to conclude this lovely tale.

What a Cliffhanger

I couldn’t wait to start this sequel since I loved The Darkness Outside Us so much, but I struggled with the new characters. I am glad I persevered because the story split between the past and the present and the ending was so good.

Really enjoyed

This is such a good sequel! I personally love the wayfarer series by Becky chambers (especially 2) and this has such similar vibes but much more gripping! The continued political intrigue was interesting. Queer sci-fi is just so good.

Couldn’t stop listening
