About this listen

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.

Excellent, engaging and profound, but rather too long in some parts. Discussion of belief and disbelief is highly contemporary.

Essential reading

Listened to it pretty much solidly over 4 and a half days. The dialogue became dreadfully dull in spite of the very good story and themes. Perhaps this is due to the age of the book or the translation.
I didn't think it had to be quite so long as it was but I got through it.
I really enjoyed the narration and found it funny that the accents of the Russian peasants were spoken in a sort of Northern English accent.
This is my first Dosteyevsky book and I will be tackling 'Crime and punishment' next.

Good story and themes.

very hard to initially get into but so much to learn from such a deep book.

After reading «Crime and Punishment» i believed that Dostoyevsky maybe was’nt for me, but this book knocked me down to the ground. Definetively one of the best books i’ve ever read (if not the best one)! This, along with Gregorys superb narration, makes «The Brothers Karamazov» a must-read for all who loves books or otherwise.

Simply masterful

I chose the Brothers Karamazov because Billy Connolly highly recommended the trial scene in his autobiography. It took me a long time to get there and there were times when I almost gave up. For me, there were a lot of words for a little story. The religious "commentary" was a bit too much for me.

However, overall, I am glad that I listened because it was an experience. I thought that Constantine Gregory did a really good job. His women's voices were a bit hard to take but I imagine that it isn't easy for a man to impersonate a woman, any more than it is vice versa. I started listening to a version recorded by Alastair Campbell and had to give up and change to this version.

Glad I read it
