About this listen

Read with warmth and humour by Imogen Church, narrator of Bridget Jones's Diary and Jill Mansell's Maybe This Time'

Join Lulu Lewis, a retired detective with a knack for uncovering secrets, and Conrad, her extraordinary talking cat, as Christmas cheer gives way to festive fear . . .

Hoping for a relaxing festive break, Lulu sets off with Conrad on her canal boat, The Lark, to the picturesque city of Bath to visit friends. But when the pair arrive, they learn of a ruthless kidnapping plot that is plaguing parents in the area.

As the kidnappers fuel panic with further demands, the pair must unravel clues faster than Conrad can charm with his witty banter. That is, if they are to stand any chance of bringing the criminals to justice in time to save the holidays . . .

The Cat and the Christmas Kidnapper by L T Shearer is a charming cosy crime for fans of Richard Osman and S. J. Bennett.

Critic reviews

A charming, offbeat story with some great characters. I’m sure it will make readers long for their own canal boat and, quite possibly – if they don’t already have one – their own talking cat. Conrad is a delight (S. J. Bennett, author of A Death in Diamonds, on The Cat Who Caught a Killer)
Charming and original. This book is the cat’s whiskers (Anthony Horowitz, author of Close To Death, on The Cat Who Caught a Killer)
A captivating, charming and gentle tale, perfect for all those who love their crime cosy (Peter James, author of One of Us Is Dead, on The Cat Who Caught a Killer)
A fabulous country mansion, an art heist and my favourite detective duo, Lulu and Conrad the cat; this had me curled up and purring from first page to last (Orlando Murrin, author of Knife Skills for Beginners, on The Cat Who Solved Three Murders)
A terrific read – murder, arson and a cat who is so much more than he seems! (J. M. Hall, author of A Spoonful of Murder, on The Cat Who Solved Three Murders)

I do enjoy these books they are a nice easy listen, nothing too taxing. I find the narration over the top some times though, inflections in odd places. However, it has a talking cat in it and I enjoy that.

I keep listening for the cat

I have enjoyed all the books in the series so far, the first book is still my favourite, but this book was pretty good. The story was interesting, but I still can't get over the fact that LuLu and Conrad still talking to each other like people who have only just met considering they have lived together for over 12 months? No cheeky banter or off page adventures or evens that they reference.

I love Imogen Church as the narrator she is truly wonderful!

All in all the story was very good, the pacing was decent, the characters were interesting, the story didn't get too convoluted and wasn't as dark as I thought it was going to be, which is a bit of a shame because there are characters in this book who I personally felt should of had something very very bad happen to them and frankly I don't think anyone would of battered an eye.

Who is Conrad the cat?

This is an excellent fourth instalment in the Conrad the Cat Detective series. I found it a totally immersive listen as Lulu and Conrad are drawn into the search for a kidnapped young girl, whose captors are using her to extort money from wealthy residents in the Bath area.
The story blends festive charm with mystery and suspense perfectly, and the characters remain as endearing and clever as ever. Imogen Church’s narration is spot-on, making this a highly recommended listen.

Superb Listen.
