Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Chalk Man by C. J. Tudor, read by Andrew Scott and Asa Butterfield.

None of us ever agreed on the exact beginning.

Was it when we started drawing the chalk figures, or when they started to appear on their own?

Was it the terrible accident?

Or when they found the first body?

Critic reviews

Wonderfully creepy - like a cold blade on the back of your neck (LEE CHILD)
The Chalk Man works, it's a lively and entertaining read . . . Tudor's got talent
This assured debut is very much in the Stephen King vein - creepy with plenty of menace
Hot damn C. J. Tudor's The Chalk Man is good. Very Stephen King-esque (Ruth Ware)
CJ Tudor's very clever, wrong-footing debut will leave you checking that doors and windows of your holiday cottage are secure . . .
A striking debut
A tense gripper with a leave-the-lights-on shock ending
You'll be gripped by this cracking debut novel . . . it will keep you up all night with all the lights on. This intriguing, satisfying thriller delivers a series of shocks . . . reminiscent of the master of horror Stephen King

When playing the older person narration was difficult to make out at times. Which was a shame great book.

Narrator difficult to hear at times.

Finished the book quite quickly as I found it difficult to put down. It’s disturbing on a couple of levels, both the horrors of the actual story as well as issues going on in the background. I liked the fact it was told over two timelines, 1980’s and present day and I enjoyed all the different characters. The narration is generally good. I liked both voices but found it very irritating that a teenage boy with an English accent becomes an adult with an Irish accent. That made no sense at all and I kept thinking there was going to be a part in the book where he moves away to Ireland for a while or that there would be another reason in the plot to account for it but there wasn’t.

Gripping & disturbing thriller

I really enjoyed the story. It kept me gripped and wanting to listen till the end. What I didn’t enjoy was Andrew Scott’s narration. It was dreadful and so difficult to engage with. I loved him in Sherlock but he’s terrible as a storyteller.

Good story bad narration

Ruined by a terrible narration , on occasion I had the volume up to such a degree, just to hear
what the adult Ed was saying, and what was with the change of accent??

Very good story

it took a few minutes to fall into the dull tones of the narrated character but as soon as I understood that his tone was actually the characters way, I absolutely loved the narration.

That, in an audio book for me, is the starting point and makes all the difference.

Pretty good story too. I would definitely but this story if you're considering it. one of the best this year for me.

narration was excellent
