In May 1996, three expeditions attempted to climb Mount Everest on the Southeast Ridge route pioneered by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Crowded conditions slowed their progress. Late in the day twenty-three men and women—including expedition leaders Scott Fischer and Rob Hall—were caught in a ferocious blizzard. Disoriented and out of oxygen, climbers struggled to find their way down the mountain as darkness approached. I don't blame Anatoli but it doesn't have the pull of into thin air. the reader was not good though.

Having read Into Thin Air and some of the criticisms around the disaster I am so glad I have had the opportunity to hear this perspective. In all honesty my heart breaks for Boukreev as his heroism has gone largely uncelebrated. This is a brilliant book, well written and well performed and can strongly recommend it to anyone interested in either the disaster or in mountaineering.
