THE BRILLIANT FIRST BOOK IN THE BESTSELLING HILDUR SERIES, SOON TO BE A TV SHOW!

*WINNER OF THE 2025 PETRONA AWARD*
*SHORTLISTED FOR THE CWA CRIME FICTION IN TRANSLATION DAGGER AWARD 2025*

'Satu Rämö's Hildur series is a wildly successful publishing phenomenon that has put the genre of "Nordic blue" on Europe's literary map' The Guardian

'Atmospheric and startlingly original' Sunday Times

Hildur Rúnarsdottir is the only police detective working on the isolated west coast of Iceland. She is desperate to forget her traumatic past by burying herself in her cases alongside her new trainee, Jakob Johanson. But Jakob's life has its own complications, and it soon becomes clear that neither can run from their pasts for long.

When a local man is found with his throat slit, underneath an avalanche that has buried much of the evidence, Hildur and Jakob must set their own problems aside and unravel the dark secrets to expose a killer . . .

Praise for Satu Rämö:

'Hildur Rúnarsdóttir, a police detective who surfs the icy waters of Iceland, barrels into the genre like a tsunami. This book must be read in one sitting' Max Seeck, NYT and Der Spiegel bestselling author

'Rämö plans to continue Hildur's story, and if she does it as well as in this, her debut novel, she may become a significant new name in Nordic crime fiction' Helsingin Sanomat

The story was gripping and I loved all the characters. Nicely set up for a sequel too.

Descriptions of Iceland.

The story started with a few disconnected events, and these combined with the Icelandic names meant I had to really listen to follow the plot. However, the characters were quite interesting, the location quite novel, and there were some background details about the country. The disconnected events found their connection eventually and the Icelandic names and pronunciation became more familiar. I will probably listen to another book by this author.

Interesting murder mystery

The main caracters were fragile. It was difficult to se the connection to the murdered people, rignt until the last chapters.

Mysterious deaths

I really enjoyed this book. The descriptions of Iceland, the weather, the scenery and the customs are skilfully woven into a gripping investigation.
Well narrated too. Have downloaded book 2 and am looking forward to number 3 later in the year.

Gripping story

This book was a great introduction to Hildur, her colleagues and Iceland. It was moderately paced and set up story lines and historical events ready for the sequel. Wonderfully read.
