About this listen

From the famed author of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo comes this strange tale of two brothers, identical in appearance but opposite in tastes and yet connected by an unbreakable bond. After its publication the tale was adapted for stage and cinema on multiple occasions. Narrated by Michael Ward and intended to be heard with the illustrated Kindle Edition.

I listened to this one because I watched the 1941 film as a child and have been strangely enamoured of it ever since. The story is ok, but it’s very slow in that exploratory style that old writing used to have. It spends much more time on world-building than plot, which is fine if the world is unique and the plot is very interesting. Sadly, in this case, neither was true. Most damningly, the story wastes a truly interesting premise - the mysterious understanding between the Franchi twins, the most interesting aspect of the story.

I love some of Dumas’ work, like the Count of Monte Christo. This is not one of my faves.

Not amazing. Fine. I guess.
