About this listen

It is the autumn of 1880, and Dr. John Watson has just returned from Afghanistan. Badly injured and desperate to forget a nightmarish expedition that left him doubting his sanity, Watson is close to destitution when he meets the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes, who is investigating a series of deaths in the Shadwell district of London. Several bodies have been found, the victims appearing to have starved to death over the course of several weeks, and yet they were reported alive and well mere days before. Moreover, there are disturbing reports of creeping shadows that inspire dread in any who stray too close.

Holmes deduces a connection between the deaths and a sinister drug lord who is seeking to expand his criminal empire. Full Sherlock with a twist. I enjoy the narrator too - EXCEPT - his accents are inconsistent and inaccurate. Mrs Hudson sounds at times Welsh, Northern Irish or Geordie. Also there are strange mispronunciations, like “rooted” when it should sound “rowted” (as in “utterly defeat”not “go via a certain way”). Also the word “deity” comes up a lot and I’m pretty sure that Watson would have said Day-uttee not Dee-uttee. These things get quite annoying....

Great RP but very dodgy accents

found the narrator so bad I couldn't even get through the first chapter. he reads like it's the shipping forecast

ponderous and unengaging narrator,

Some neat ideas drawing together Cthulhu mythos with late Victorian spiritualism of the Conan Doyle type.

Somewhat let down by occasionally dubious pronunciations and a certain drabness of delivery, but I suppose it's perhaps in keeping with the diaristic style of narration

Interesting crossover

After the BBC did The Terror I could easily imagine them picking this up and converting it to TV. It would make an excellent Period/Cthulu/Horror series. Brilliant but it's only 3 books, please write more, love it.

Loved it

Very fun mashup of two oddly compatible fictional worlds. Look forward to the others!

Cyclopean, my dear Watson.
