Summary

Featuring a delightful cast of characters and timeless Buddhist wisdom, and with His Holiness' compassion pervading every chapter, The Dalai Lama's Cat is simply enchanting. Not so much fly-on-the-wall as cat-on-the-sill, this is the warmhearted tale of a small kitten rescued from the slums of New Delhi who finds herself in a beautiful sanctuary with sweeping views of the snowcapped Himalayas.

In her exotic new home, the Dalai Lama's cat encounters Hollywood stars, Buddhist masters, Ivy League professors, famous philanthropists, and a host of other people who come visiting His Holiness. Each encounter offers a fresh insight into finding happiness and meaning in the midst of a life of busyness and challenge.

Drawing us into her world with her adorable but all-too-flawed personality, the Dalai Lama's cat discovers how instead of trying to change the world, changing the way we experience the world is the key to true contentment.

This audiobook also contains six delightful tracks taking you through guided stretches and sits, including:

  • How to sit when you meditate
  • Standing roll down and breath counting
  • Paw raise and purring
  • Threading the needle and body awareness
  • Cat pose and visualisation technique
  • Shoulder bridge and analytical meditation
  • Paw stretch, tranquillity and affirmations

I loved the audiobook version because David Michie's voice is so soothing to listen to that he creates exactly the right atmosphere. It didn't worry me to have a male voice for a female cat because the mood won me over straight away.

A gentle and light-hearted set of morality tails (sic) from the viewpoint of the Dalai Lama's cat, who interprets Buddhist teachings within the context of her own escapades.

I particularly enjoyed the dialogue between the Dalai Lama and the vegetarian teenager but all of the stories are warm, humorous and ones that you can relate to your own life. The feeling of calm induced was exactly what I needed at the moment!

As a bonus, any cat-lover will recognise the 'snow lion' gourmet life-style, scrounging food and attention in her several homes, from Frank's café to her official home in the Dalai Lama's Palace. The cat's meditations on the human scenarios and lessons she witnesses are a playful reinforcement of messages that do not feel preachy but rather offer a way of thinking, like water for a thirsty spirit, there for you to drink from if you choose.

Leaves you feeling zen

If you love cats, the Dalai Lama och Bhuddism, you will love this charming tale. It will not stretch your intellect, but what is wrong with a smile to sooth away the stresses of modern life. Nice meditations at the end to listen to last thing at night.
Having spent a fair time in Dharmsala and McLeod Ganj, I had a vivid picture the place. (This was to write a novel partly set there, titled Cloud Fever.)

Charming little story
