Stephen King's epic fantasy series, The Dark Tower, is being made into a major movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Due in cinemas February 17, 2017 USA.

In the second novel of King's best-selling fantasy masterpiece, Roland of Gilead, the Last Gunslinger, encounters three doors which open to 1980s America. Here he joins forces with the defiant Eddie Dean and courageous, volatile Odetta Holmes. And confronts deadly serial killer Jack Mort.

As the titanic forces gather, a savage struggle between underworld evil and otherworldly enemies conspire to bring an end to Roland's quest for the Dark Tower....

Masterfully weaving dark fantasy and icy realism, The Drawing of the Three compulsively propels listeners toward the next chapter.

And the Tower is closer....

Fantastic characterisation, vivid descriptions, great narration. King at his best. What more can you ask for really?

Engaging

I read this series over 10 years ago and wanted to re-acquaint myself with the saga.
It has a lot more action in it than the first which was more cerebral.
It has Kings attention to detail, giving even the most smallest character a backstory and their own voice without the novel feeling flabby.
My only criticism is that the reader/narrator is a little bombastic. It works for him best when he is reading dialogue and pros from sections of the book set in New York, but it can be comical in the more subdued sections which undermines the tone.

part 2

if you made it through book one and weren't hooked, this one will hook you and reel you in deeper into the quest. The lady of shadows is the gentlest hard case you will ever meet, she makes the drawing of the three.

book 2 will hook you.

I really enjoyed the second instalment of the Dark Tower, particularly the sequences through the doors in the ‘real’ world. The character building throughout is magnificent, and I really found myself deeply invested in the character’s individual stories. With one exception. Whether it’s because it was on audiobook and therefore more pronounced, but I had some difficulty with the Detta passages, which verged on irritating. However, I was happy with how things came together at the end, so will definitely be kicking on with book 3.

An engaging second instalment
