About this listen

It will be no easy task to fill the shoes of a local legend like DCI Charlie Woodend, the newly promoted Monika Paniatowski tells herself – particularly when he’s still a very real presence in Whitebridge – but given a little time, she thinks she can grow into them.

Yet time is the one thing she does not have. On her first day in the new job, a severed female hand is discovered on the riverbank. And not only that, but the killer has already alerted the press. Only hours into the case, she find she can no longer trust her colleagues – or even herself – and the urge to pick up the phone and beg Woodend for help becomes almost irresistible.

I always enjoy books read by Nicolette McKenzie, she is very good with the narration and has a very pleasant speaking style.

This story was excellent from start to finish!

Nicolette McKenzie raises this 70’s set crime story to a highly engaging drama. Her characterisations are really well delineated and she performs the entire book, rather than simply reading it, in a thoroughly engaging way. Some narrators simply read the words, but Miss McKenzie gives them life, which is great skill. She is gifted with a voice that is very easy on the ear. I shall certainly be listening to more of her work.

Excellent Narration
