I bought the audio version of this book and, as anticipated, the narration throughout is superb. Having read and listened to this series, I much prefer the audio version because it adds a whole different dimension to the story and characters.

I’ve waited eagerly every June for the next in the series and picked up the additional short stories. I’ve yet to be disappointed by the quality of the plotting and the development of the characters. Denzil Meyrick is one of a handful of authors who has maintained a series exceptionally well; no plot contrivances for convenience or formulaic writing. Every one is a winner.

There are echoes from book 9 in which one of the recurring characters died. Although this works well as a stand alone, it’s a series which really does work best if read in order. I’ve grown to love the central characters. Jim Daley and His DS, Scott. Both have demons. But they’re not held down by the baggage and they’re distinctly different characters. They play off one another, with Scott’s gruff and dark humour along with malapropisms making him feel real. I have mental pictures of every character and the location.

This tale is a real mix of people from the past, themes from earlier stories and both Daley and Scott trying to rebalance and move on with their lives. Their respective wives are central to the character development and unusually, the personal side of the tale doesn’t detract from the crime story. I feel a part of this strange little Kinloch community; it takes a talented writer to create a seemingly real world for readers to invest in. Meyrick has done it. This is a cracking addition to the series and won’t disappoint.
