Have been a long time fan of Peter V Brett and loved the Demon cycle, lot track of how many times I’ve read and listen to them. These newer books I was reading more for the nostalgia but it wasn’t until this book that I found myself fully invested and eager for more. Really looking forward to the next book and will relisten to this one again.

The first books were about society finding a way to develop and fight back against the demons. We had characters with depth and as they developed we cared about them and their struggles, their lives and the their futures. It was a good well balanced fantasy series with an original and interesting world. Unfortunately this is no longer the case. This and the previous book have taken such a tangent, they just don’t seem to
have been written for the same loyal readers and audience. I all honesty the demons and struggles for all of
Humankind’s survival and future
Have become very much secondary to the teenage angst and struggles with finding their identities, struggles with autism and generally finding their place in the world. I have no issue with that or underplay the importance of helping people with this through books and stories. However I just don’t feel that’s what the original readers of the demon cycle came and stayed for. I feel these last two books would have been better as a separate young adult series co

As the original series is one of my favorite fantasy series, I can’t help but feel that this was a letdown. Things that were built up as extremely difficult and rare (one in a thousand) in the original series now feel simple.

I’m also not a big fan of spending two books with the cast in one place, only for a third to take them somewhere else without much closure for the remaining tasks. This would be less of a problem if it were a jumping-off point for a new series or another book—but sadly, it’s the end.
