Knowing the truth will destroy her. Keeping it secret will destroy him.

It’s Livia’s 40th birthday and she’s having the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding she never had. Everyone she loves will be there except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But although Livia loves Marnie, she’s secretly glad she won’t be at the party. She needs to tell Adam something about their daughter but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together.

Adam wants everything to be perfect for Livia so he’s secretly arranged for Marnie to come home and surprise her on her birthday. During the day, he hears some terrible news. He needs to tell Livia, because how can the party go on? But she’s so happy, so excited – and the guests are about to arrive.

Like other reviewers, based upon her previous novels, I was expecting more from this author. This book must have something because I stuck with it and I tend to return anything I am not enjoying! That said, right up to the end, I expected more to happen. The premise is fine, but alone, it is not enough to hold-up so many hours. Much of the story is flat and a bit tedious. The narration is very good.

Disappointing!

OMG.....!!!!!!! This book was soooooooo drawn out. A couple married for over 20yrs who don't know how to communicate with each other! The last quarter of the book was so frustrating I found myself shouting out to hurry up and say what needs to be said but it just went on and on and on!!!
Livia was a most irritating, selfish and childish woman, going on about her stupid party like a 5yr old. Why didn't she wait for their silver wedding anniversary and have a "wedding" party then.
How many times did they say the stupid name 'Marnie'????
It could have been a brilliant book, the concept was brilliant but it was just too frustrating.
When Adam was FINALLY trying to tell Livia what had happened, she kept butting in and asking "was it this. ..was it that??" OMG woman, just shut up and listen. I felt like shaking the two of them!!!
The last quarter of the book spoilt the whole thing.
Good narration.

I thought it was an interesting plot. I liked the fact that it was ever changing with new bits of information. I like the narrators voices they seem well cast. I got very involved in the story and found myself shouting at Adam "Tell her now!" many times. I would recommend this novel but it might be a bit harrowing if you've lost someone in a similar way.

Interesting with one twist after another
