About this listen

"Sherlock Holmes Disappears, Police Suspect Famed Detective in Kidnapping and Murder" reads a New York headline. So begins the fifth mystery in Larry Millett’s series.

A letter, written in a secret cipher he recognizes all too well, reveals that an old foe of Holmes - a murderer he once captured after an incredible duel of wits - is back, has kidnapped his previous victim’s widow, and is now impersonating Holmes himself. Holmes must once again match wits with a particularly cunning adversary, one whose hatred of Holmes has seemingly become the killer’s single greatest obsession.

Chasing the kidnapper from London to New York to Chicago, Holmes and Watson race to keep up. Every move Holmes makes is expected; every trap proves elusive. Only with the assistance of his American cohort, the saloonkeeper Shadwell Rafferty, can Holmes hope to settle the score once and for all - or be framed for the crime himself.

A rattling good yarn

These Sherlock books have been free to listen to and I have been most impressed by them.
Good storylines and very imaginative in the situations that Holmes and Watson find themselves!
Narration is spot on for these books 📚

Very enjoyable

I found this to be somewhat less enjoyable than the first four books.
First, Steve Hendrickson’s narration was very good. Yet I found he seems to have changed Dr Watson’s voice a little from previous books.
Importantly;
Dr Watson would not in England call a Train Station a Train Depot. I don’t believe ACD did.
Dr Watson would not call distance to Train Station/Depot ‘2 or 3blocks’ while in England.
An English squire would not engrave wedding ring with date in the American format(mm-did-yy), even when the bridge is an American lady, particularly when the wedding took place in England.
All perfectly fine when SH and JW are in USA, not while they are in native England.
These coming right at the beginning bugged me throughout.

5 books in and still the narrator can’t pronounce “Irene”. An enjoyable story nonetheless which held my attention throughout
