Summary

THE EAGLE'S CONQUEST is the thrilling second novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Eagles of the Empire series. Essential reading for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.

When Centurion Macro arrives on British soil as one of Emperor Claudius's invasion force in AD 43, he is facing one of the toughest campaigns of his battle-scarred career. In a series of bloody skirmishes, Macro and his young subordinate, Optio Cato, and the desperately outnumbered Roman army must find and defeat the enemy before he grows strong enough to overwhelm the legions.

But the Britons are not the only foe facing Macro and Cato. A sinister organisation opposed to the Emperor is secretly betraying the invaders. And when rumours of an assassination attempt coincide with the Emperor's arrival on British soil, the soldiers realise they are up against a force more ruthless than their acknowledged enemy...©2001 Simon Scarrow

I like the descriptions of the people and the situations, it is as if you were there experiencing it yourself.
I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the Roman era.

Great story, well researched, well read. Gripping stuff! only negative thing I'd say is the romantic elements are a bit cringey..

Great listen

I really enjoyed the first book of the Macro and Cato series of books by Simon Scarrow. I purchased the first three books via an Audible offer so I quickly started the second book.

The conquest of Britain continues. Plots started in the first book are continued into this book and some even have a conclusion.

This book is very similar to the first book. Cato is still learning and finding his feet, while Macro is still the gruff centurion. The book has some minor skirmishes before the main battle scenes at the end of the book. The emperor turns up to take command of the battle, and the author gives a believable description of what can go wrong when people in power think they know better.

As this is a spoiler free review, I will not mention the ending, but it was gripping reading even if you knew how it was going to end.

This leads onto the problem with established series - you know that the main characters will survive (how else can they appear in future books). This does take a little away from some elements of this story. That being said, there is nothing written in stone for the supporting characters and some come a nasty end.

The book ends with the legion still in Britain talking about future campaigns, so I would assume the next book will be in Britain as well.

Audiobook: The audio was well executed just like the first book. David Thorpe returns as the Narrator and gives a sterling performance. Some of the comments seem to be a little 'modern', given in a modern British army accent.

There will be a weeks break before I start the third book in the series.

A sequel that matches the first book

Both story and deliver are fantastic, the characters are deep and believable and the narration is delivered with true feelings that really helps to paint the mental picture and put you in the shield wall with them.

I have already started book 3 as I type this review.
