Summary

When Eilian Sorrell, a promising archaeologist and the eldest son of the earl of Dorset, loses his arm in a dirigible crash, he fears he will face a bleak future among London's aristocracy. On a quest for normalcy, Lord Sorrell commissions a prosthetic arm but finds the craftsman is not what he seems.

After the death of her brother, Hadley Fenice takes over his prosthesis business but knows it will be an uphill battle, as women are discouraged from doing men's work. In return for building Lord Sorrell an automaton arm, he offers her a chance at freedom by following him to the Negev Desert under the guise of a man.

But what lies beneath the desert is more precious than potshards or bones. As they venture deeper, they discover a society where the path of life is not governed by gain but by passion. When imperialistic invaders come in search of a new colony to pillage, Eilian and Hadley are forced to defend their fleeting glimpse of paradise.

I never got close to even a quarter of the way in, the narrator was the worst in over 400 audible books I have listened to. That is not hyperbole either, dull delivery, the narrative was constantly derailed by his mispronouncing of so many basic words. How he got a job as a narrator eludes me.

I am intrigued enough by the story to read it instead.

Dreadful Narration

The sort is ok but rather simplistic and predictable but ruined by the awful narration. There are innumerable mispronunciations - viscount rhymes with discount?! And it is difficult to tell from the narrator 's intonation if a sentence is finished or suddenly carries on. I eventually gave up on this story as I realised I no longer cared what happened to the characters.

A very poor narration. I do not recommend the audio version. Read the book instead.

Good story

The story itself was good, but very much spoiled by awful narration. Whoever was reading was reading the words and not the story. No emotion, tonal changes and excruciatingly poor pronunciation throughout, to the point where what he was saying would make no sense. Material with crying tears rather than ripped tears is but one example.

Loved the book. Story was excellent. Very sweet romance.

Audiobook narrator was terrible. Pleasantly timbred voice ruined by not appearing to understand punctuation; weird pauses and stresses; odd inflection and many many mispronounced words. The book deserved better.

Read the book.
