Summary

To the Jockey Club, the racing world would be a better place without Julius Apollo Filmer. An expert in corruption with a devastating line in witness intimidation, and proving to be a slippery character to put behind bars. Baffled, they call in undercover security agent Tor Kelsey to keep an unflinching eye on Filmer and his associates. A mission that takes him from the finest of English racecourses to the wild Canadian interior, on a luxury transcontinental train journey to end them all. On board, a troupe of actors are playing out a murder mystery to amuse their wealthy passengers. Ideal cover for a secret investigator with secrets of his own. And ideal cover, as it turns out, for an ice cool blackmailer with murder on his mind.©1988 Dick Francis (P)2014 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The story is great, as you would expect from Dick Francis. I read it years ago and thoroughly enjoyed listening to it in 2017. His work ages very well. Tony Britton reads it wonderfully. The problem with it is that the quality of the audio file is poor. It speeds up and slows down, making Tony Britton sound alternately asleep or manic. This is a fault in the production, not in the reading, which is excellent.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tony Britton’s performances?

Yes

Still a great book, and great performance

Dick Francis dies not hand around and his narratives don’t make pace. I read the book thirty years ago and after touring Canada I enjoyed listening to the audio book and remembering the locations. The train journey is amazing as are Canadians and the book is highly entertaining.

I went on the rail trip 30 years later and enjoyed reliving the cities and towns and Alberta and British Columbia.

Another success for Dick Francis & team. Interesting from start to finish. A train journey across Canada combined with racing, what’s not to like.

Any additional comments?

I always enjoy a good Dick Francis, and this is good Dick Francis! It is set mostly in Canada on a 'special' version of the trans Canada train. The hero is good, the villain is bad, and the story keeps you listening. Oh and its all about horses and horse racing. What more can you ask from a light read.
