About this listen

When the end arrives, how far will you go to survive?

With over 4 million books sold, the number one best-selling and most prolific post-apocalyptic thriller author Mike Kraus brings a gripping tale of destruction, survival, and humanity like no one else can.

On a quiet evening like any other, virtually anything that uses fuel goes up in flames, killing billions in the first twenty-four hours alone. Remnants of governments reel as they try to deal with the destruction of their countries and decimation of their military infrastructure as their cities burn to the ground.

On a quiet beach in South Florida, Alice Burton and her two children have started the family vacation early - all that's left is for James to fly in from a conference in Colorado. When the small beach town they're staying in is consumed by fire, they're forced to seek help on foot - facing dangers both natural and manmade at every turn.

Meanwhile, at the Denver International Airport, James Burton hides beneath an overpass as cars and planes erupt in flame around him. His survival is not guaranteed, as a treacherous journey through the heart of Denver and beyond awaits him if he has any hope of reuniting with his family.

Back home, on their small farm outside East Lansing, Michigan, Alice's parents are house-sitting, and are about to experience the most intense test of their survival and homesteading skills that they could ever imagine.

Sorry was alright but too long. I did not like the narrator very much, speeding it up helped.

I recently read The End of All Things by Mike Kraus. The overall premise is strong, and the core story is engaging. The world-building holds attention, and there is genuine tension in parts. However, I found the scenarios increasingly frustrating as the book progressed.

The main issue for me was the repetition of poor decision-making by the characters. Once they have been ambushed in a city, you would expect them to learn from that experience. Instead, they repeatedly place themselves in similar situations. Rather than feeling like believable human error, it began to feel like the mistakes were being repeated purely to maintain excitement.

There is a difference between characters who make flawed decisions because of personality, fear, pride or desperation, and characters who repeat mistakes because the plot needs another dramatic moment. In this case, it often felt like the latter. As a result, the tension became predictable. When danger follows the same pattern, it loses its impact.

About halfway through, I found myself losing patience. The story itself is good, but the repeated scenarios weakened the sense of realism. I wanted to stay with it, but eventually the frustration outweighed the enjoyment.

It is an interesting concept with strong narrative potential, but the repeated decision-making undermined the credibility of the characters and ultimately reduced the impact of the story for me

Don’t binge listen.

read book 1and part of book 2 but found the story really slow and dull, too much padding out of boring things like bringing in crops and canning peas and potatoes ...snore much zzzzzz

dull story

It’s a frightening idea that something like this could happen. It was well written and told. Being English some how the words were pronounced was annoying- sorry!

How many people that died.
