About this listen

It's the most anticipated event of the decade – Big Lou and Fat Bob's wedding! After a wonderful day, Big Lou crashes back down to earth and finds that she is a victim of her own success. The lure of those famous bacon rolls is preventing her from leaving hungry customers without their daily dose of deliciousness. Will Big Lou find the happiness she so richly deserves?

The relative peace and tranquillity of 44 Scotland Street is about to be disrupted. Irene is to return for a two-month stay, consigning Bertie to a summer camp. Not satisfied with that, she somehow manages to come between the enigmatic nun, Sister Maria-Fiore dei Fiori di Montagna, and her friend, the hagiographer, Antonia Collie.

Can a person really change, even after being struck by lightning? Bruce's metamorphosis is put to the test as he prepares to leave his creature comforts for the monastic simplicity of Pluscarden Abbey. His house sitter, meanwhile, gets a little too comfortable and discovers that the talented Bruce Anderson's shoes are all too easy to slip into.

I love the Scotland Street series. Often they are laugh out loud, and sometimes heart rending, particularly when seven year old Bertie is involved. He is my, and I suspect almost everyone else's, favourite character, but I just wish that he didn't have to suffer quite so much from the horrendous Olive and Pansy. How I long that 'orrible Olive should have her come uppance!!

Poor Bertie

So easy to listen to. I love Alexander McCall Smith's imagination. David Rintoul, pllleeeaaassse always narrate 44 Scotland Street books. I don't think it'll be the same someone else narrating.

Never disappoints

Book 16

Each time a new book in this series appears I ask myself if I can do without it. Answer yes of course I need it!

I love AMS’s dry sense of humour and sometimes miss the jokes and have to retrack and laugh my way through the next chapter.

Roll on the next instalment.

Another enjoyable instalment of the characters in Scotland Street

Impossible to describe how wonderful these books are, I ran out of superlatives a long time ago. David Rintoul’s narration is perfect, a real pleasure to listen to. Highly recommend this listen.

The best ever series

Found it strange that in the 16th book of the series Bertie’s mother was referred to as Irenie instead of Irene as in all the others.
Also, found the lack of Big Lou in the storyline regarding Big Lou was a bit strange, left it feeling unresolved, and like listening to gossip rather than a story that could have given more to a great character.

Irenie?
