Summary

Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.

Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing." Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

A solid book if you are looking to learn about the Nakba from a partisan Palestinian perspective. It's a well researched and a detailed account of the expulsion of the Palestinians to round out your knowledge from other sources. Do not make this book your only authority on the conflict though. Atrocities committed by the Arab forces are ignored; Palestinian settlements are ethnically cleansed in lurid detail, whereas Jewish settlements are "lost" as if into the aether with nothing more said on the matter. The author makes leaps of logic such as one commander requesting a bulldozer to destroy some houses as proving that Israel's existence was never actually imperiled by the Arab military forces. However when approached critically this book remains a solid resource for learning more about the history of Israel and Palestine.

Blatant bias, but you knew that from the title.

I appreciate the way every sentence is documented, references to archives, names, locations and really detailed information on numbers and facts. It has helped me to have a factual perspective of the current situation. No opinions added, only the display of documented facts.

History repeats again and again

This book is great for anyone who wants to learn about the history & genocide that has taken place in Palestine by the hands of the Apartheid state. Also highlights the other government who are complicit in the ongoing ethnical cleansing of the indigenous Palestinians..

Israel is not a democracy but ‘the only Apartheid state in the Middle East’
