Summary

They stole his crown. So, he stole their daughter…

For years, Erik, the scarred king of the Ever Kingdom, has thought of nothing but vengeance against the man who killed his father and trapped him beneath the waves, making him a prisoner in his own realm.

Until his enemy's daughter unintentionally breaks the chains on the Ever, and Erik makes her the unwitting pawn in his vicious game of revenge.

She's innocent. He's vicious. He will take back what he lost, no matter the price. Unless she steals his heart first.

Welcome to the passionate world of the Ever Kingdom, where pirates, sirens, and fae collide with Vikings in a dark fantasy romance between a villain and the innocent princess who holds his heart.

This book ends on a cliffhanger. This series is set in the same world as the bestselling Broken Kingdoms series but can be listened to independently.

While Will Thorne is actually British, Lucy Rivers so obviously is not, that it was excruciating listening to her try to sound like an American’s idea of a Royal. The story was excellent and had all the fae torture and violence you would expect from this genre as well as all of the great steam and banter. The story got curiously convoluted right toward the end. The side characters were well written as were the main characters. The worlds were very interesting and described well. It’s just the cod accent and the curious chirpy inflection that made the female voice truly annoying. Unfortunately very few Americans can convince as Brits so why bother? Will Thorne sounded dark and deep and perfect (even though he does have an inflection he seems to like to use which you have to enjoy.) The various voices, including a weird Cockney, read by Lucy Rivers distracted from the content, so I read as much as I could as a palate cleanser.
I may read book two but I will not be listening to it.

Dual POV audiobooks are perfection! Loved both narrators so much!

What a journey! I loved it so much!
If you need a Dark Fantasy Romance with Pirates that meets Vikings, Sirens, Fae and Sea Witches And an ending that makes you want to read the next book immediately, this is your book!
The world-building is stunning and the slow burn just perfect!
The tension and spicy are well balanced with angst
Livia is strong, passionate and innocent: she’s a Songbird
Erik is the scarred king of the Ever Kingdom, vicious: he’s the Serpent.
But she will steal his heart!
That cliffhanger was brutal!
I cannot wait to for book two, this is going to be a fantastic series!

I love this book and its sequel so much. I’ve read in ebook format but wanted the audiobook as well and I’m happy I got it. The narration was not my absolute favourite but I still appreciated it and it didn’t not take away from the amazing story!

My favourite love story

I’m sure the story itself is brilliant, but the narration? Absolutely tragic. I’ve genuinely never heard English accents butchered this badly! “Warrior” came out as wooorweeur, and that was just the start of the horror show. Every mispronunciation had me physically wincing.

I lasted as long as I could, then had to switch it off before my ears packed their bags and left me. I’ll read the book instead and save myself the trauma.

The whole thing reminded me of Dick Van Dyke’s legendary “cockney” accent in the original Mary Poppins 😭😭😭

To everyone who has asked me to read this series - I am sorry I waited so long!!! I found this book a little slow to start, but I can see how that would happen when introducing such a vast world to new readers. By around 30% I was hooked, and when the audiobook finished I IMMEDIATELY pressed play on book two. The audiobook for this read was perfect, the narration for Erik especially was 10/10 - the way he says 'love' has me MELTING.

I adored the world and magic system of this book (it has me so hyped to read Broken Kingdoms!) - LJ Andrews does a fantastic job of giving enough detail to keep it interesting without overloading the reader. I also adored the political element with Livia being an heir to the throne of her realm, and Erik being the king of his. Adds a super interesting element to the story - I'm excited to see how it plays out in book two!

I loved the characters in this book!! Livia is a great MH rep, and I love the way that it's she's never made to feel ashamed or weak for it. Erik Bloodsinger. This MAN. He's such a well written character - meant to be the enemy but you just can't hate him. Some fantastic side characters in this story too - I especially love Selene and how she becomes friends with Livia.

I love a slow burn, forced proximity romance and the tension for this book was sky high. I loved the connection our two main characters have right from the beginning. I seem to have recently fallen into my pirate-romantasy era and I'm having the best damn time.
