Now, Izzy's father sends her a letter. He wants to talk, to defend himself against each piece of evidence from his trial. But should she give him the benefit of the doubt? Or is her father guilty as charged, and luring her into a trap?

Critic reviews

Absolutely unputdownable: convincing, compelling and ultimately heartbreaking (Erin Kelly)
A very special book - a page turner that is gripping, suspenseful and heartfelt, with a superb ending that delivers twice (Claire Douglas)
A brilliantly compelling and tightly plotted psychological thriller. The characters are real and complex, and McAllister's writing both grips and thrills. Her best yet! (Lucy Clarke)
This sharp, super-readable thriller stands out thanks to its taut plot and characters you really care about
Gillian McAllister lures you into the heart of her characters. She makes ordinary people do extraordinary things in the face of adversity. Haunting. Compelling. And all too possibly true (Jane Corry)
Clever, original and packed with family complications throughout, you'll change your mind time and again. . . and the ending will take your breath away
A heart pounding premise is taken on a journey that is as emotionally enriching as it is thrilling. I couldn't look away from this razor sharp exploration of truth, love and how the past shapes our present. Gillian McAllister is a tour de force, she just gets better and better (Holly Seddon)
The characters are as compelling and complex as the action. It's a brilliant psychological thriller which is even better for Gillian's professional knowledge (Amy Lloyd)
Flawless plotting and gripping from the first page to the last
Intricate plotting delivers a tense and suspenseful thriller

I love this writer. The characters are subtle, complex and engaging. Yes, there is suspense and a murder at the centre of the story - but the real story is the emotional impact this event has on her daughter and husband. Gillian McAllister avoids cliche and generalisation that can so often ruin this genre. This is just a really well written novel, that happens to be about a murder. The narrator is very classy. At first I was annoyed by her slightly underpowered, whispery vocalisation (it was hard to hear on the tube) - but I got used to it. Her pacing, characterisation and use of intonation is spot on. All round, this is a great listen!

Beautifully judged

I was gripped from start to finish - wanted to reach the finish but didn’t want it to end!! Thank you Gillian

not as good as "no further questions" which was amazing. this one didn't get my brain working and guessing as much. it was more slow and boring. I wasn't as invested in the characters. they were drab. but the quality of writing was fantastic, and I thought the narration was good too. The reveal was anti climactic, even though I didn't guess it. the ending wasn't as happy as I thought it would be.

I will definitely read more McAllister but I do hope the rest are of the same fast paced calibre if No Further Questions

good, but not as good as her other one
