The plague raging through London in 1665 has emptied the city. The only people left are those too poor to flee or those who selflessly struggle to control the contagion and safeguard the capital's future. Amongst them, though, are those prepared to risk their health for money - those who sell dubious 'cures' and hawk food at wildly inflated prices. Also amongst them are those who hold in their hands the future of the city's most iconic building - St Paul's Cathedral.

The handsome edifice is crumbling from decades of neglect and indecision, giving the current custodians a stark choice: repair or demolish. Both sides have fanatical adherents who have been fighting each other since the Civil Wars. Large sums of money have disappeared, major players have mysteriously vanished, and then an unidentified skeleton is discovered in another man's grave.

A reluctant Chaloner returns to London to investigate, only to discover that someone is determined to thwart him by any means - by bullet, poison or bludgeon - and he fears he has very little time to identify the culprits before he becomes yet another victim in the battle for the cathedral's future.

With a London devoid of Charles II and his court, this Chaloner adventure benefits. What we are given is a twenty year old mystery that leaps to Thomas Chaloner’s searching investigation in a plague ravished city focused on the aging St Paul’s Cathedral and a lurking executioner. With his usual dedication,n Chaloner follows the clues amongst a motley variety of characters and happenings. The character Bing, is a delight. Chaloner is physically challenged and he needs his all of his luck and wits. As frequently the case in Susanna Gregory novels, little is what it seems to be - but my modest delight was working out one of the major malefactors early on. For those interested in history, plague preventatives figure strongly, as does an unexpected and resourceful ally. This adventure whipped along and the audio-book was very well delivered by a performer who knows the main characters ‘back to front’. Chaloner’s love of music gives temporary easement, as do poultry in a baking, grim, and food scare city. This is thoroughly enjoyable adventure which all can take to with confidence.

Couldn't take to the narratiom, began to irritate me so have up. I guess if I'd been reading if have finished book ....narration just not for me ...

Having read the first two paperbacks in this series and loved them both. I thought I would try an audio version of another to see if it was as good as actually reading it for my self. I was delighted with the range of voices the reader creates for each character and found it did not spoil my own imagined characters but put sound to them and made them more real than I had expected. Love the book, love narrative and looking forward to the next one. In fact I may get the whole series including the tow paperbacks I have already read. Wish I had tried this first.

This a Challoner story ...so why isn't it linked to the rest? However it does convey how claustrophobic London must have been when closed off by the plague. An intreguing tale well narrated ...dont change the narrator his is voice now firmly linked in my head with Thomas Challoner
