Many would have disliked to live if possessed of the peculiar features of Arthur Jermyn, but he had been a poet and scholar and had not minded. He had not minded, that is, until a peculiar box object arrived from Africa. After seeing it, he went out on the moor and set himself on fire. Discover what it was about the object that explained his peculiar personal appearance and made him end his life.

This audio version of an HP Lovecraft short story does little to impress. Narrator Yancy has a deep gravelly voice but delivers the tale incredibly slowly which feels like an attempt to lengthen the running time by a few minutes. Rather than a slowly unfolding sense of dread Yancy evokes boredom and depression. At times I found the tale hard to hear clearly due to what seems like some vague attempts at sound manipulation to make the narrators voice spookier, along with an intrusive background music and effects track. Feverish fans of Lovecraft might give this three stars but the majority of listeners may think two stars is a rather generous review.

unspectacular attempt at Lovecraft tale.
