I have read quite a number of Elizabeth Chadwick’s books. I have enjoyed the history, the battles, the strong knights and stronger women. Women had to be strong to survive. Not just child birth but husbands, brigands, and in this story Saracens. Sabin and Annais meet but are worked to stay away from each other by her father Strongfist. Sabin got into trouble a lot and womanised a lot too. He was sent to the Holy Land to get him out of the country. While on a ship he was introduced to Strongfist when they had to fight pirates to save the ship and passengers.
Annais thought he was not to be trusted and had sharp words for him on numerous occasions. She was married to a kind knight and after awhile she gave birth to a son. Her husband died from a wound that festered. But on his deathbed had both Annais and Sabin swear to wed each other to protect his son and his son’s birthright.

They married but only in name at first.
Later they came together admitting attraction to each other. Sabin admitted that he had been attracted right back on the ship when she had given him a good telling off.
Annais goes to the king of Jerusalem’s court to help the queen while Sabin and the Kings army go to fight the Saracens.
They lose. They have to provide hostages to make sure that the King will pay the ransom money for letting the King and some of his knights go free from captivity.

Annais, her son, her stepmother and the kings daughter, as well as a boy called Josaline are some of the hostages. Sabin goes along as escort with other knights.
It does not work out well
But Annais and Sabin have a baby boy while in captivity. Strongfist comes for his daughter, his son-in-law and two grandsons as well as Josaline. He has already released his wife and the princess before coming to this stronghold to pay the ransom to release the hostages.

Everything does not go to plan, but eventually they go home. Back to Montabard.
