Summary

This is an audio-enhanced version - with music and sound effects - of one of the earliest stories from the master of horror, Edgar Allan Poe.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" tells the tale of Roderick and Madeline Usher, ailing siblings who inhabit a gigantic mansion that is, as they are, slowly deteriorating.

A thrilling and eerie story from the greatest writer of suspenseful tales in literary history.

I’ve read the House of Usher before, but this was my first time listening to it. The narration is so poor it’s almost a parody.

Great story, ruined by narration

This is one of Poe’s more haunting works. It is very subtle and full of symbolism. I listened to it three times and then had to go to YouTube and watch a video version and I still think I’ve only begun to grasp why is going on in this story. It is beyond your typical haunted house tale in that the occupants are still alive (some maybe more than others) and the haunting is of the mind and soul more than merely seeing apparitions. Told from the perspective of a visitor to the house, the pain and sorrow evident in the family and soaked into the very walls of the house unfolds as the descent into madness of the last living male heir of the Usher’s lays his sister to rest in the family tomb. As the bloodline falls, so does the house and almost everything and everyone within it. Very well read in the original prose by one of my favourite narrators, with the addition of sounds to enhance the listening experience. I am going to now have to watch a film and maybe a few more items then I’ll come back and listen yet again! I get something new each time I listen. Highly recommended is you love classics, Poe and maybe a few nightmares!

Ok I’m a little creeped out now.

The narrator sounds continually unnecessarily surprised, to be honest this ruined the story for me.
