About this listen

Suspenseful and richly atmospheric, June Hur's The Forest of Stolen Girls is a haunting historical mystery sure to keep readers guessing until the last page.

1426, Joseon (Korea). Hwani's family has never been the same since she and her younger sister went missing and were later found unconscious in the forest near a gruesome crime scene.

Years later, Detective Min—Hwani's father—learns that thirteen girls have recently disappeared from the same forest that nearly stole his daughters. He travels to their hometown on the island of Jeju to investigate… only to vanish as well.

Determined to find her father and solve the case that tore their family apart, Hwani returns home to pick up the trail. As she digs into the secrets of the small village—and collides with her now estranged sister, Maewol—Hwani comes to realize that the answer could lie within her own buried memories of what happened in the forest all those years ago.

There's a wealth of history in East Asia that isn't really known in Europe, so I very much enjoy the way that June Hur adds a mystery to a bygone era, sharing with us knowledge about what life would have been like in those days.

The Forest of Stolen Girls is yet another evocative story from a land that has given up its girls many times over for various empires strolling through, and I think that will probably be a story well known to the peoples of Eastern Europe. It's almost funny how power is abused in the same ways, the world over, huh?

Alas, we get a somewhat slow paced story, but beautiful layered world building and a realistically damaged sisterly bond that's slowly being rebuilt. The way the times they lived in influenced the way the sisters grew up, and the way their personalities split them apart is a particularly well done aspect, as well as the loyalty they have to their father, in its very different aspects.

Another superb story by June Hur
