Summary

A Rivers of London novella, from Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Ben Aaronovitch.

There's something going bump on the Metropolitan line and Sergeant Jaget Kumar knows exactly who to call. It's PC Peter Grant's speciality...

Only it's more than going 'bump'. Traumatised travellers have been reporting strange encounters on their morning commute, with strangely dressed people trying to deliver an urgent message. Stranger still, despite calling the police themselves, within a few minutes the commuters have already forgotten the encounter - making the follow up interviews rather difficult.

So with a little help from Abigail and Toby the ghost hunting dog, Peter and Jaget are heading out on a ghost hunting expedition. Because finding the ghost and deciphering their urgent message might just be a matter of life and death.

Left wondering why this story wasn't incorporated into a full length novel. Good story more akin to the early books, with touches of Neverwhere. But some unresolved plot holes and the asides to American listeners /readers niggled. Teen character may please younger audience but overall not sure this was worth a credit.

Ben Aaronovitch and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith are my dream team audio book pairing. Engaging stories full of the believable and unbelievable, narrated with clarity, precision, humour and an uncanny ability to move between character voices.

Great story, superb narration

The usual set up of the likeable PC Peter Grant, the urbane DCI Nightingale and weird Molly. Pleasantly supernatural. I very much enjoyed it. Narrator excellent. Veers from English RP to West African seamlessly. Likeable voice for a likeable character.

The combination of Ben's storytelling and Kobna's narration is a match made in heaven. Listening is such a joyous experience that I had planned to save this novella till Christmas. But instant gratification took over...
The PC Peter Grant universe lends itself well to the novella format - I hope there is more.

Unfortunately there is one detraction. The translation of English cultural specific terms into American English - for Reynolds (CIA agent) . It's annoying and disrupts the flow. Despite Kobna's seamless rendition - it jarrs me out of my suspension of disbelief every time.

A treat
