About this listen

In the year 2130 a mysterious spaceship, Rama, arrived in the solar system. It was huge, but empty - apparently abandoned. By the time Rama departed for its next unknown destination many wonders had been uncovered, but few mysteries solved. Only one thing was clear: everything the enigmatic builders of Rama did, they did in threes.

Eighty years later the second alien craft arrived in the solar system. This time, Earth had been waiting. Now Rama II is on its way out of the solar system. Aboard it are three humans, two men and a woman, left behind when the expedition departed. Ahead of them lies the unknown, a voyage no human has ever experienced; and at the end of it may lie the truth about Rama.

Arthur C. Clarke was born in Minehead in 1917. During the Second World War he served as an RAF radar instructor, rising to the rank of Flight-Lieutenant. After the war he won a BSc in physics and mathematics with first class honours from King's College, London. One of the most respected of all science-fiction writers, he also won Kalinga Prize, The Aviation Space-Writers' Prize and the Westinghouse Science Writing Prize. He shared an Oscar nomination with Stanley Kubrick for the screenplay of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was based on his story, 'The Sentinel'. He lived in Sri Lanka from 1956 until his death in 2008.

female reader's French accent truly awful, other than that very good. fortunately you only have to suffer her dreadful accent for half the book..

good

Although I enjoyed this story, but why write the paedophilic parts? Surely with an entire galaxy and almost infinite time to play with, the author didn't have to include not only one, but two, very questionable sexual partnerships. There were several overtones of sexuality referenced which I guess shows the age of the book. But I'm pretty certain that at any time in the 20th century, a match between a 13yo girl and 70+ man, was deemed as wrong. Why did the story have to go there??

Great story marred by questionable ethics

Although not bad in terms of the story (albeit the later parts are better than the initial monologue), the real letdowns of this audiobook are the terrible French accent by the female narrator in the initial part of the book, and the shocking lack of editing during the male narrated remainder; I don't know whose responsibility it was to listen through and edit out the mistakes/repeated lines in the recording, but they totally dropped the ball here. I expected better when this is such a high profile book. Thankfully Toby Longworth is good enough at his job that his mistakes are few and far between!

Let Down by Accents and Editing

this third Rama wasn't my cup of tea. too little science fiction and too much social politics. it isn't terrible, but Rama 3 feels completely different to the previous two books.

different type of storytelling

This novel could have been written week's ago the author never overburdens the reader with detailed descriptions but instead allows you to imagine the scenes and characters for yourself.
He truly was one of the finest science fiction writer's ever.

I love how current and new A C Clarke still is .
