About this listen

O. Henry wrote many stories, but this, the story of two "ultimate gifts", is his most famous.Public Domain (P)1977 Jimcin Recordings Christmas Classics Fiction Growing Up Growing Up & Facts of Life Holidays & Celebrations Literature & Fiction Winter

Editor reviews

O. Henry, the pen name for William Sydney Porter, became famous for sentimental stories that conclude with ironic twists. The Gift of the Magi, first published in 1905, is the most famous one of them all.

The story concerns Jim and Della, a couple of modest means who are searching for Christmas gifts for each other. Without revealing too much of this carefully wrought story, the lengths this couple goes to buy the perfect gift ultimately proves how true love equals sacrifice.

In a bell-clear voice, Cindy Hardin Killavey gives a plaintive, empathetic performance of this heart-warming classic.
