About this listen

It is early spring in 1944, and Allied troops will soon invade northern France. Alice Todd is beginning her second year as warden of a Land Army hostel located in the wilds of Devonshire.

Here she has won the affection and confidence of the girls in her charge and found herself caught up in lives which are complex, humorous, and sometimes tragic.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Girl at the Farmhouse Gate to be better than the print version?

2nd book well worth the listen :0)

Was a little put off after a previous review, but glad I ignored it and purchased the 2nd book! Yes it did repeat the story's chacters, but only to remind you of the story so far.

Off to purchase the 3rd instalment now! Can't wait.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Girl at the Farmhouse Gate?

Lots of different parts, Hester and Rubens story, Mabel and verdys Saturday night rituals, to even georgie coming to her senses with Christopher and Mrs crackers cheeky banter.

What about Patience Tomlinson’s performance did you like?

I love the ease of listening to her stories and voices so relaxing!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes I have laughed and punched the air in parts, but also shed a tear or two!

Any additional comments?

Hate gwenannes chacter, she really grates on me!

Not only is this story lovely, the follow on from Muddy Boots and Sild Stockings. Patience Tomlinson reads it beautifully with lots of 'voices' for each person. I would recommend this book for a lovely read.

Lovely story read beautifully

This book is a sequel to 'Muddy Boots and Silk Stockings' about lives of landgirls and a land army warden living in a hostel at Lower Post Stone Farm, Devon in 1944. The story revolves around the 'Post Stone Girls' and the other characters who live and work at the Farm. Their individual stories interweave into an account of one year in the lives of very different people brought together by the war.
I read 'Muddy Boots and Silk Stockings' last year and was left a little disappointed by the end which left the story hanging. I was pleased to discover that there is a sequel which continued the story but I was very disappointed by this second book.
It is incredably repetative, constantly retelling the story from the first book; necessary if you haven't read 'Muddy Boots and Silk Stockings' but very irritating to those who have. Rather than being a complete book in itself, this feels like the second half of a book. The resulting two volumes are long winded and by the time I got half way through the second book I was beginning to lose interest in the story and characters. It might have been better to combine the two books and edit the result.
The end of this book certainly leaves scope for a third book to follow as loose ends have been left. I personally won't bother to listen to any more in this series.

Disappointing Sequel
