About this listen

RITA Award finalist and Christy Award winner Julie Klassen delivers historical romances brimming with the eloquence and intensity of Jane Austen. In an abandoned gatehouse on an old estate, Mariah Aubrey lives in seclusion. She supports herself by writing novels in secret—at a time when such writing is considered improper and unladylike. Soon the wealthy and ambitious Captain Bryant leases the estate and is intrigued by the beautiful girl in the gatehouse. But will he risk his plans—and his heart—for a woman shadowed by scandal?

This novel was very lengthy in content. The storyline changed a few time's in different directions, incorporating a spectrum of personalities from different social experiences a d status. But it remained centred around the main character; a talented female author, fighting against society's often hypocritical prejudices. Finally converging towards themes of loss, redemption and peace. Portrayed through strong personalities who flavoured the progression of personal hopes and dreams.

Multiple hopes realised.

Easy listening with good characters. I really liked the quotes at the beginning of the chapters. I found myself constantly extending the listening time as I was enjoying the story.

Enjoyable listening.

Just beautiful! Beautifully written and expertly narrated. A lovely ending, I had a tear in my eye. Pure escapism to a world when people were the most important thing, and how acts of kindness can mean everything. I also recommend The Painter's Daughter too by Julie Klassen. I will definitely be reading more by this author as I love her writing style and characters. 🤍
