This is the first Steve McElhenny I have read and I hope it won't be the last. The book is interesting from start to finish with well developed characters and a great storyline. The ghost of a girl killed some years previously is intent on revenge on people involved in her "accidental" death. Willard is a great lead character and his friends are typical teenagers. The book isn't too scarey and I finished it in one sitting. Highly recommended story.
Unfortunately for me the book was let down a bit by the narrator, Brichan Lyrr Jones. He was very good at the narration of the story but as soon as he started putting individual voices to the characters it fell apart. They were stalled and totally unatural. It was almost as if he was trying too hard to speak clearly. He has a lovely Welsh accent but seemed to be trying to get rid of it. I also found the sound effects annoying rather that enhancing to the ambience of the narration. Sorry for negativity in this area.

Being an 80s child myself and UK born the setting of this novel strikes a chord for me. As for the horror classification, I'd say it falls squarely in the "eerie" category and brings to mind the good old Hammer Horror movies. McElhenny's usual flowing narrative is well in evidence but the humour is cut back (considering the plot this is justified) so don't be expecting to laugh like you did at Draculand. Look elsewhere for gore galore but if you enjoy a good haunting then this book will certainly fulfill your needs.

Now onto Brychan Llyr Jones' narration... He has such a wonderfully rich deep Welsh accent which should lend itself well to a spooky ghost story but alas his character voices are greatly lacking. The cadence is too slow resulting in me speeding it up to 1.25 x speed and the elongated silences between the chapters had me checking to see if the app had crashed.

absolutely loved the story. it was well written with a hint of traditional ghostly tales set on the backdrop of the 80s. Focussed on a solid story of mystery and the uncovering of age old secrets. The narrator has a beautiful rich tone which was perfect for the story.

If you're looking for modern jump scare tropes and bucketfulls of blood this isn't a book for you. The use of appearances for the ghostly girl is used sporadically maximising effect. This an old school ghost story at it's heart. Sad, poignant and mysterious. Brychan Jones narration has a tone of Burton and Michael Sheen to it adding to the atmosphere, one can imagine listening to this by a fireplace with the lights turned down.
