Summary

In 1640, Alys Bailey was accused of witchcraft and sentenced to hang. Today, Alys is said to haunt Lockwood Hall, the Tudor manor house where she died.

When Nicole Rayburn travels to Lockwood Hall and begins to research Alys’s story for a new book, she discovers startling irregularities in Alys’s case. Nicole’s suspicions mount as every answer leads to more questions. What really happened to Alys? And what became of her son, who disappeared the day she was hanged? Could it be that Alys’s death was the result of a well-planned conspiracy, or is there another, less obvious answer? And who is trying to sabotage Nicole's efforts by stealing her work?

As Nicole delves deeper into Alys’s life, with the help of a handsome crime writer and a history-obsessed vicar, she comes to realize that “fake news” has been around for centuries, and that everyone has secrets. Once she finally learns Alys’s, Nicole’s life will never be the same.

Perfect for fans of Susanna Kearsley, Barbara Erskine, and Wendy Webb.

This is definitely definitely one of my favourite series. It is beautifully written and an intriguing story. I can’t recommend it more 😁

Absolutely loved it

Irina Shapiro's books are really good. The quality content is great and I'm generally "hooked" into the story from the first paragraph. I really enjoyed the Redmond and Haze series. I've just begun the first book in the Nicola Rayburn historical mystery series and although the story is very engaging I find my enjoyment is diminished by the distractions of the narrator's accent (for example pair becomes parr, jersey becomes jazzy, forest/fauxrest, water/woeter etc etc). I feel that a narrated story should be about the story and not the narrator, and unfortunately I have to read this book if I hope to finish it - what a pity.

Great story - poor narration

I would love to listen to the rest of the series as the book was good, although not up to her previous books in my opinion, but Unfortunately, the narrator was so awful that I sadly won’t be listening to any more of the series

The terrible narration

the narrator got just about every character wrong... eg a village blacksmith speaking like a lord, locals seemed to get Irish or even Liverpool accents when the story was set in Derbyshire. She mispronounced so many words... her poor performance really spoilt it for me and I will never listen to anything she narrates again!
