About this listen

An addictive small town mystery thriller with a killer twist

For a hundred years, the residents of a rural Welsh village have been hiding the truth. Now, a newcomer has started digging around, uncovering more than just buried secrets. Retired detective, Graham Williams, has moved to Bethgelert for a fresh start, determined to put the horrors of last year behind him. He has seen his fair share of disturbing scenes, but nothing prepares him for what he sees hanging in the gnarly old tree outside his front window.

Only one man can help him uncover the truth ...

Stephen Mallow has come a long way since he helped solve the mystery of Cherry Hollow. When his old nemesis calls and asks for help, he jumps in the car, ignoring the pain in his head and the hole in his heart. He’s ready to take on another weird and creepy small town mystery.

These two unlikely allies, whose main form of communication is bickering, start to work together to dig up the disturbing secrets of ‘The Hanging Tree’, but they soon realise there’s more to the story than they first thought.

A teenage girl is missing. The town butcher isn’t telling them everything. The tree seems to be speaking to Stephen ...

And someone is watching their every move ...

From Jessica Huntley, award-winning and best-selling author of ‘Jinx’ and ‘Horrible Husbands’, comes ‘The Hanging Tree’, a brand-new twisted thriller, perfect for fans of Claire Mackintosh, Lisa Jewell and Louise Jensen.

An excellent thriller with folklore and the mystery of the Hanging Tree. Retired Detective Graham Williams moves to a Welsh village there's a missing girl and he asked his friend reporter Stephen Mallow to help him. Well drawn characters and a oroginal plot that kept me listening till the early hours. I look forward to Jessica's next book. The narrator moved this book along nicely at the right pace and was clear with a voice that was easy to listen too.

The Hanging Tree is the perfect blend of thriller and horror. Jessica is one of the only ones that can make me enjoy horror elements in my thrillers. There's constant tension and creepiness throughout the book, the atmosphere is absolutely eerie. Jessica is a fantastic writer and the way she makes her stories come to life in my mind is insane. It's filled with myth, legends, murder, mystery or is it really one of those? So many secrets throughout and it kept me absolutely hooked until the very end.

I loved revisiting characters from Cherry Hollow, it is not necessary to read The Darkness series, but it does give you a real background on what the Darkness really is and the characters. For me it definitely made this book that much more enjoyable. The pacing was a little slow at times, but the chilling, creepy atmosphere truly kept so invested. The ending was satisfying and had a meaningful message, she always manages to sneak in something deeply emotional.

Overall, this was a great read, perfect for fall and spooky season. The atmosphere is absolutely perfect, descriptive and so easy to play out in your mind.

🎧 The narration by @candacefitzgeraldvo was outstanding as usual. She is so amazing at playing each and every single character by herself. It never gets confusing, each of them have a distinct voice, even the men (which I forgot it was a woman playing them most of the time 🫣) she is that good. Her accents are perfect. She creates such a tense atmosphere with her voice and brings the creep factor 100 percent!
