Summary

'Eddie looked evil in the eye and met it with joy and kindness . . . [his] philosophy is life-affirming' – Daily Express

Holocaust survivor Eddie Jaku made a vow to smile every day and now believes he is the ‘happiest man on earth’. In his inspirational memoir, he pays tribute to those who were lost by telling his story and sharing his wisdom.

Life can be beautiful if you make it beautiful. It is up to you.

Eddie Jaku always considered himself a German first, a Jew second. He was proud of his country. But all of that changed in November 1938, when he was beaten, arrested and taken to a concentration camp.

Over the next seven years, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors every day, first in Buchenwald, then in Auschwitz, then on a Nazi death march. He lost family, friends, his country.

The Happiest Man on Earth is a powerful, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful memoir of how happiness can be found even in the darkest of times.

I almost have no words. The horrors of WW2 just never get more bearable to read about but Eddie's ability to make the most of his life is nothing short of inspirational.

I just wish I'd bought it while he was still alive so he could have seen one more buyer. Happy that his family will benefit from my interest though - if they haven't benefited enough from being around such a great man.

Read this if you need to feel better about whatever little issues you have in your relatively perfect life. Almost everybody has a relatively more perfect life. Eeeeeesh.

Horrifying but what a story of survival.

Fascinating recount of such a traumatic experience. Eddie's acceptance, resilience, hope, and joy in the wake of such trauma are a lesson to all of us in how we should be grateful for what we have. I found Jacek Koman's narration excellent. I had to keep listening until 2.30am, whereas usually I'd have switched off long ago. Thank you for sharing your story "my new friend".

Enthralling story, excellently narrated.

A triumphant life of Hope and Love over unspeakable cruelty. May these beautiful, profound words and lessons learned, never, ever be forgotten. I cannot find words to express my deeply a loving respect for Eddy Jaku.
