About this listen

Every family has its ghosts…

When three innocent children play a game that ends in fatal consequences, it sets in motion a series of events that will haunt their family forever…

After the horrors of World War One, disillusioned army chaplain John Elliot arrives at Hern Hall, an isolated estate in the mist-shrouded English countryside. The mystery of the estate's tragic past seems to linger in the shadows when John catches a glimpse of a drowned child's face beneath the dark waters of the lake.

Though he suffers from shell shock, John is determined to keep a promise he made to his friend Will, who died in the trenches while saving John's life. Before meeting Will's grieving parents, Lord and Lady Chiddingstone, John first encounters Will's sister, Lucy—a beautiful, blind, and mysterious young woman.

Invited by Lord and Lady Chiddingstone to stay as a guest at Hern Hall, John experiences a series of unsettling and eerie events, including attending a seance led by the infamous spiritualist medium, Madame Blanche, whom Lady Chiddingstone hopes can communicate with her dead sons.

As John grows closer to the family, he uncovers more about their traumatic past and the disturbing secrets hidden within the walls and tunnels of Hern Hall. Is the family cursed, as an ancient legend suggests?

Can the ghosts and the living ever find peace, or are they destined to be forever haunted by death?

The premise was interesting. I really enjoyed the story.

Sadly, let down by the narrator, he spoke as if announcing an action film for hard man gangsters.

Good story

A wonderfully atmospheric ghost story in the classic tradition of The Woman in Black yet with the drama and chilling suspense of Stephen King. I thoroughly enjoyed this historical mystery set in a gloomy mansion in the wake of World War One.

A dark yet powerfully moving Gothic tale

I'm a sucker for a well crafted, spooky and atmospheric horror yarn, and from the first few chapters I knew this would be a good listen. Tragedy, family bonds, loyalty and fear all intermingle, and the time setting being just after The Great War touches repeatedly on the themes of duty and sacrifice throughout, right to the end.

There's a good amount of World building and setup of the family dynamic, and the sense of personal threat and tragedy localised to the titular Hall brings to mind the James Herbert tales set in the early 20th century, or the stories of generational curses and revenge from MR James' short form horror.

The narration is clear and urgent, although sometimes overwrought and not especially fitting for a given character. But even so, it's a good listen and has enough twists and turns - including a bittersweet finale - to keep you interested.

Gothic Historical Horror in the vein of Herbert or MR James
