Summary

Now a hit Netflix miniseries directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton

Past the rusted gates and untrimmed hedges, Hill House broods and waits.

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own.

This classic horror novel has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror.

A classic indeed. An atmospheric, unsettling psychological drama in a claustrophobic setting. Wonderful writing and characterisations. I loved Bernadette Dunne’s narration of the Mad Adam trilogy. She is superb and the perfect choice for this book.

The definitive haunted house chiller

Some reviews are quite condescending mentioning the TV production but I enjoyed it more. Nice unsettling imagery and no padding. Certainly more psychological drama that jump scare horror but no worse for that.

Still spooky after all these years.

Very enjoyable listen that often gripped me. I don't think many modern audiences will find it scary and for me the scares are few and far between. However, the scares that are there will send shivers down your spine.

The house itself is the main character and what a character is it, Jackson's descriptions of Hill House really allow you envisage this grandiose, awkward and dark house that just sits waiting for its prey.

The performance of the story teller was strong and clear making it easy to follow the story but also differentiate between the characters.

A book with a classic reputation for good reason

Shirley Jackson at her absolute best. One of my favourite books, a masterpiece in psychology and gothic horror. The narrative is excellent. A perfect jump between characters. I highly recommend this title and know, I will listen to it over and over
