About this listen

Maya Angelou has fascinated, moved, and inspired  countless readers with the first three volumes of  her autobiography, one of the most remarkable  personal narratives of our age. Now, in her fourth  volume, The Heart of a Woman, her  turbulent life breaks wide open with joy as the  singer-dancer enters the razzle-dazzle of fabulous  New York City. There, at the Harlem Writers Guild,  her love for writing blazes anew.

Her  compassion and commitment lead her to respond to the  fiery times by becoming the northern coordinator  of Martin Luther King's history-making quest. A  tempestuous, earthy woman, she promises her heart to  one man only to have it stolen, virtually on her  weding day, by a passionate African freedom  fighter.

Filled with unforgettable vignettes of  famous characters, from Billie Holiday to Malcolm  X, The Heart of a Woman sings  with Maya Angelou's eloquent prose -- her fondest  dreams, deepest disappointments, and her dramatically  tender relationship with her rebellious teenage  son. Vulnerable, humorous, tough, Maya speaks with  an intimate awareness of the heart within all of  us.©1997 Maya Angelou; (P)1997 Random House Audio, Inc.

Critic reviews

"I know that not since the days of my childhood, when people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself SO moved."

-- James Baldwin

"Full of laughter and tears, love and hate, failures and triumphs, and above all, understanding."

-- John O. Killens

"Gather Together in My Name

"Gather Together in My Name is part of a select body of literature that includes The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Claude Brown's Manchild in the Promised land, and Ernest J. Gaines's The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Maya Angelou regards the world and herself with intelligence and wit; she records the events of her life with style and grace."

-- William McPherson, The Washington Post Book World

"Here the 'caged bird' soars, and sings in a voice as rich and funny, passionate and mellow as any writer I know."

-- Shana Alexander

As always, Maya Angelou tells a human story which, although is a powerful narrative on the African American experience of that time, transcends all race and culture and reminds us of the true beauty of humanity - Love, in its most beautiful and ugliest of forms. Hearing any volume of Dr Angelou's work narrated by her own unique voice is an inspiring experience.

The title sums it up. What a woman! Impossible to put down. She just draws you in.

Loved it. Finished in one go!

Having read Maya Angelou's books as a student, I am now rereading them all again as a woman of 58.
Oh my, her wisdom and humour in equal measure resonate with me so indelibly.

I see more in her words and her artistry than I did as a young woman. As a mother of older grown up kids I take a new perspective from experience and maturity. Her expression of feelings of being a mother, a lover and a friend are universal. I am white so of course I can't have experienced it all, but from one woman to another you speak the truth of do many women. As a feminist Queen Maya brings clarity to the position of women in male dominated society. I look forward to reading her again in 30 years, not sure if I will be able to wait that long.

Queen Maya!

Who am I to review such a woman. Her storytelling transports you to whichever time and place she reads about. There is joy, laughter, understanding, and total honesty in the work of Maya Angelou, which I totally love. The Heart of a Woman again reminds you of her contribution towards freedom and the voice of the sisterhood throughout struggle.

Entertaining and brilliant ad always!
