I thought I knew everything about Christmas, but this audiobook completely changed how I see the holiday. It digs into the real history behind all the traditions we take for granted like where Santa Claus actually came from, why we put up Christmas trees, and how a lot of what we think is ancient tradition is actually pretty recent.
What I found most interesting was learning that so many Christmas customs didn't start with Christianity at all. A lot of them come from older pagan festivals like Roman Saturnalia and Norse Yule celebrations. The book explains how these traditions got blended together over centuries through politics, cultural mixing, and yes, even marketing and commercialization.
