About this listen

Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina the flirt, the coquette, the tease—so called by the Sleepy Hollow villagers because she hasn't given her hand to one of her eager suitors. Everyone expects her to choose the muscled, handsome Brom over lean, studious Ichabod—but Katrina has objections to both of them. One autumn night, a harvest party at the Van Tassel house ends in a violent confrontation, and Katrina comes face to face with the most horrifying myth ever to haunt Sleepy Hollow—the Headless Horseman himself. Taken prisoner by the Horseman, Katrina is forced to confront her own prejudices and expectations as she discovers a deeper world of intrigue and magic. Contains mature themes. Trigger and content warnings are available on the author's website.©2021 Rebecca F. Kenney (P)2023 Tantor Fantasy Fiction Paranormal Paranormal Romance Romance

This was a fairly easy read that takes some inspiration from the original Sleepy Hollow tale, using a few familiar characters while adding its own twists. The world-building is different from the original story, which helped give it a bit of a fresh feel.
The story moves quite quickly into a slow-burn romance, and while the relationship develops steadily, it ended up being satisfying enough by the end. The plot twists added some extra interest and helped keep things from feeling too predictable.
Katrina, however, didn’t really work for me. She felt inconsistent and gave off too many mixed signals to come across as a strong or believable character, and at times she was a bit annoying. The Dullahan as the male lead, also felt quite one-dimensional, which made parts of the romance less engaging than they could have been. The narrator for this did a very poor Irish accent which probably didn't help.
Overall, the concept was decent and the added twists helped, but the characters didn’t fully land for me. Because of that, this sits at a 3 star read.
