About this listen

Recently widowed actress Casey Fletcher has escaped to her family's lake house for peace and quiet. She's been happily losing herself in her thoughts and several bottles of bourbon, until the glamorous couple across the lake catch her attention. They look so perfect - just like Casey and her husband used to be.
But is anyone what they seem?

Casey has a detective sat at her kitchen table.

She has a man bound and gagged upstairs.

Casey will uncover dark truths so life-changing that nothing will ever be the same again.

Critic reviews

For a fresh and twisty take on Rear Window, just add water: The House Across the Lake is a propulsive, tautly-plotted and atmospheric thriller with a vividly drawn cast of compelling characters and a final what-just-happened twist that will have you reeling. Loved it!
Rear Window gets a jaw-dropping twist in this tense, daring and utterly propulsive thriller. If you're not already reading Riley Sager, you're missing out.
Brilliantly written with a dark and clever twist on a well-worn trope, and as for that ending...?! What a fun book. I devoured it!
Riley Sager is an auto-buy for me, and his latest propulsive thriller, The House Across The Lake, may just be my favorite of his yet. With his characteristic mix of dynamic characters and riveting plot twists, Sager will keep you turning the pages in his foray into secrets, grief, revenge, and love.
The House Across the Lake is the work of a master storyteller. A Hitchcockian premise is given an exciting new spin, as voyeurism, murder, and the lies we tell ourselves about our nearest and dearest spiral out of control in this gripping mystery, where nothing is what it seems. I had a thrilling time reading this. An unputdownable page-turner
I was immediately, wonderfully immersed in this absolutely elite - and darkly secret - world. Such sinister fun. Riley really knocked it out of the park.

I mean, I don’t know. It’s been three days and I still don’t know. Maybe that’s a good thing? First 70% of it… yeah I’m in… narrator was fab ( I usual struggle with American narration (sounds robotic to me) but this was fantastic) I’m getting into the Rear Window Vibes, maybe cutting a bit of slack that it’s a guy writing a female and it kinda shows but I’m in… I’m invested. Then it just goes… it’s like I’m going to have a competition and the fan who wins can finish writing the last 30% of the book ! The jump is beyond itN I was actually raging out loud ….it was so ridiculous.

And then I kinda went with it and got into it again. A bit.

I still ultimately feel robbed. But I won’t call the cops, I’ll just let it go. That’s all I can say without spoilers.

The book took you through tales of what you thought was predictable endings or happenings only to surprise you and switch from first page to last. Riveting listen.

Outstandingly unpredictable

Nothing about the premise felt fresh, it was mostly predictable, except for some of the twists at the end that weren’t predictable but only because they were quite daft.
Having said all that it was a reasonably entertaining listen, if you’ve got a credit to use and nothing else takes your fancy. The narrator is easy to listen to

Very average listen

At one point I was ready to stop listening as nothing seemed to be happening.
And then the twist came. I'm so glad I stuck with it.

Curious.

Really enjoyed it, thought you knew what was happening and then it changed. Might have been a bit OTT, but I still enjoyed it!

Good twist
