About this listen

Summer 1924: on the night of a glittering society party by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses are sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, and they will never speak to each other again.

Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet’s suicide. Ghosts awaken and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace’s mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge – something history has forgotten but Grace never could.

Set as the Edwardian summer finally surrenders to the decadent twenties, The House at Riverton is a multi-million-copy bestselling novel and one of the most successful debuts of all time.

Such fascinating history and wonderful descriptions of the lives of people and their social class at the beginning of the 20th century. How times have changed! I loved every minute of this brilliant novel. Beautifully read by Emilia Fox.

I enjoyed the book on the whole. it is a good story plot and has strong characters. However, I found the first half slow to get hooked into, lack of action, and far too much detailed description of places and thoughts.

Strong relationships and themes

I love Kate Morton books, however this book I felt I had to wade through it! It took a few hours of listening before it sparked my curiosity as to how the story would progress. If it wasn’t for the excellent narration which really brought the characters to life I think I may have abandoned it after a couple of hours . The storyline was beautiful but could have done with being shorter - a bit too much minor detail for my liking.

Lovely story

I enjoyed the book a lot; I thought of it as a cross between Titanic & Downton Abbey. Emilia Fox is excellent as usual (I downloaded the book because she was the reader). Characters & story well put together but the writing is fantastic overall painting a real picture of the time.

Excellent narration
