About this listen

Distraught that her academic career has stalled, Alba is walking through her neighbourhood when she finds herself in front of 11 Hope Street. A woman named Peggy invites her to stay, on the house's usual conditions: she has 99 nights to turn her life around. With nothing left to lose, Alba moves in.

But this is no ordinary house.... Past residents have included George Eliot and Beatrix Potter, who have hung around to help newcomers - literally, in talking portraits on the wall! Alba begins a journey that will heal her wounds - and maybe even save her life.

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who wants to 'find themselves'

Would you ever listen to anything by Menna van Praag again?

No don't think so

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

yes the narration was the best part and all that got me to the end

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I like the idea of the ghost pictures but it didnt go far enough with the magic of the house or the characters

Any additional comments?

I expected more from the book I'm afraid, it didn't really get off the ground and the story was muddled and confused with several unfinished characters

Disappointing

Any additional comments?

I really liked the concept of this book, and thought the idea of the talking photographs was brilliant, but I was disappointed that the author didn't make more of this and the historical possibilities, as it seemed that a fair bit of research had gone into it. The book turned out to be a fairly shallow look at the romantic troubles of 3 young women. Actually I would rather have learned more about Peggy, the elderly guardian of the house, who was far more interesting. Unfortunately it didn't really grip me, and even with the magical elements, it was all a little bit too predictable and nice.

Sweet little tale of romances

Strange book to start with as set in a house occupied by ghosts but as the story unravels each woman has stale to tell. Really enjoyed it.

Different and beautiful

Really interesting and intriguing, gentle and strong. At times veers toward being a bit saccharine but if you’re in the mood for an easy listen it’s perfect

Weird and wonderful
