About this listen

Leo Stanhope. Assistant to a London coroner; in love with Maria; and hiding a very big secret. For Leo was born Charlotte, but knowing he was meant to be a man and unable to cope with living a lie any longer, he fled his family home at 15 and has been living as a man ever since. But when Maria is found dead, Leo is accused of her murder and stands to lose not just the woman he loves but his freedom and, ultimately, his life.

Critic reviews

"Creating a genuinely original protagonist in historical crime fiction is difficult, but Alex Reeve has succeeded.... An intriguing murder mystery and a complex portrait of a man isolated by his awareness of who he truly is." (Sunday Times)

"Enthralling, exciting, extraordinary and utterly convincing. Everything a great book should be." (Sarah Hilary)

"An ingenious, pacey mystery with a sympathetic hero." (Irish Times)

I felt I had to review this Audible title because although the story was reasonable enough it was ruined for me by the absolutely dreadful narration. The narrator has a perfectly pleasant voice, very much in keeping with how I imagine the main character may sound but the fluency was shocking. Sadly it continued to deteriorate throughout the novel. Very often lines would be cut short and the narrator would then realise there were still another few words to go and would tag them on as an afterthought, which changed the whole emphasis in a most distracting manner. Many words were also mispronounced, I have never heard of the coin 'a florin' called a "floorin" before. This was one of many errors. It served to distract so thoroughly from the story that I'm unsure if the plot line was actually any good!
Maybe I'm in a minority having this view, as I see the follow on novel has the same narrator. I certainly won't be listening to it.

I really enjoyed this book. it was a modern concept wrapped in an older world. A proper detective story with all of the ins and outs of a sleuth finding the killer. All the characters were so vivid and three dimensional.
