I usually purposely avoid books about or set during either World War as the world has been teetering on the brink of another war or collapse for years. However, I made an exception with the Chronicles of Caxley series because Miss Read's writing is simply delicious, irresistible and soothing. And I wasn't disappointed. In "The Howards of Caxley," Miss Read beautifully illustrates how life goes on, even amid war and personal tragedy. If anything, this book only left me inspired and moved. Miss Read and her writing never disappoint!

A nice way to spend a few hours reading. I don't read Miss Read for her brilliant writing style, inventive plots, or well-rounded character development. What I like about her books is the vintage setting of pre-war rural England. This book takes place post-WWII up to the early 1960s.
If you like Jan Karon's Mitford books Miss Read writes in a similar manner.

A perfect book, loved every minute of it. I thought it might be a bit miserable with it being wartime, but it wasn’t. More fast paced than the Fairacre series but I liked that. However, wish I’d known beforehand that this is the 2nd book of two! I now have to go back and read the first one, The Market Square.

I love June Barrie reading Miss Read books, she’s perfect!

I’ve listened to the whole Fairacre series on Audible and loved them all.

I did struggle to get a handle on who was related to who! I had to listen to the first three chapters twice and draw myself a diagram. I needed to follow it otherwise the story wasn’t making sense.

Second book of two! Perfect narration. Hard to follow the story initially, but loved it a lot
