About this listen

Eccentric, absent-minded inventor Professor Branestawm, with three or four glasses stacked up over his bald head (and he still can’t find them) embarks on a series of adventures with his friend Colonel Dedshott. Various machines are invented: a time travel machine, a device to capture and tie up burglars, and a spring cleaning machine. Inevitably, something goes wrong and Professor Branestawm is again in a pickle, exasperating his housekeeper Mrs Flittersnoop and delighting us.

Editor reviews

These beloved larks combine the jaunty "What Ho!" humor of P. G. Wodehouse with epic imagination and adventure in the tradition of Jules Verne, Hugh Lofton, and Terry Gilliam. Parents and children alike will delight in the absurdity of the absentminded Professor Bransestawm’s inventions - which never seem to work as planned - as he travels to the kingdom of "Squigalatania" in his highly combustible time machine, or blankets the town in batter from a malfunctioning pancake maker. With warmth and sprightliness, BBC stalwart Martin Jarvis (The Forsyte Saga, Murder, She Wrote) conjures up fond memories of bedtime stories, lending his genial, eloquent diction to the hapless and forgetful Branestawm, his loyal housekeeper Mrs. Fittersnoop, and his sidekick, Colonel Dedshott of the Catapult Cavaliers.

Martin Jarvis, king of the audiobook, is on amazing form in this wonderfully colourful and funny selection of stories. My eight year old and I never tire of it and frequently quote bits, aping but never hoping to match Jarvis’ genius intonations. The writing is really brilliant and funny and clever and even a bit meta, too.

Extraordinary performance
