About this listen

From hijabs to jihad and everything in between - Muslims down under today.

What is Halal? A country bordering Shariahland, or a method of preparing food? Do the Five Pillars of Islam comply with modern building codes? Or are they simply a philosophy for living? And if Muslims first arrived in Australia as early as 1800, can they go back to where they came from?

In this funny and informative exploration of Islam in Australia, award-winning comedian and writer Sami Shah takes us behind the stereotypes and generalisations to find out who Australian Muslims are, how they live and what they think.

Along the way we meet everyone from a woman who runs a 'speed date a Muslim night' to a conservative Islamic preacher and the founder of a group called Muslims for Progressive Values. The result is an entertaining and fascinating snapshot of Islam down under today.

I’ll tell you how stupid Muslim are. I bought this audio book because when I saw the picture on the cover of an Asian man with an Aussi flag turban and I assumed it was Natheem Hussein who I love, I love the way he makes us laugh at ourselves and our collective stupidity. As I listened it slowly dawned on me that I was listening to a totally different character.
I persevered because as a convert to the faith one has to see it from all perspectives. I get Sami objection to religion and Islam especially as it is practised and politicised in Pakistan, but as he droned on about stuff we’ve all heard before, I kept seeing Mother Miriam (mother Superior of a Convent) telling Martha Livingstone (investigator and lapsed Catholic) that her scepticism of faith was just cos the Faith made fear feel bad about her teenage sexual misdemeanours.
I bought the book cos I wanted a laugh but ended up just depressed. I do recommend The Secret Diary of a British Muslim by Ted Ilya for laughs about Islam without rubbishing a faith practised by Billions, and Greetings from Bury Park and They by Sarfraz Mansoor for laughs and a thoughtful agnostic Muslims view on the Faith. Sallam
