A gripping new mystery from the million-copy-bestselling author Tana French

On a cold night in a remote Irish village, a girl goes missing.

Sweet, loving Rachel Holohan was about to be engaged to the son of the local big shot. Instead, she’s dead in the river.

In a place like this, her death isn’t simple. It comes wrapped in generations-old grudges and power struggles, and it splits the townland in two. Retired Chicago detective Cal Hooper has friends here now and he owes them loyalty, but his fiancée Lena wants nothing to do with Ardnakelty’s tangles. As the feud becomes more vicious, their settled peace starts to crack apart. And when they uncover a scheme that casts a new light on Rachel’s death and threatens the whole village, they find themselves in the firing line.

Terrific, pacey, and a times really frightening adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat and glued to my audio.
Excellent character development, no stale charaterisations, instead fresh perspectives all round.
I feel we may be leaving Cal now. I don't want to, but accept that it might be the right time and told in the right way.
This series is brilliant.

Whoa! what a gripping tale, as always and performance sharp as a tack.

Each Cal Hooper story gets better and better. The characters own this compelling mystery story, taking us by the hand and peeling back the layers of complexity and emotions which drive a seemingly small and inconsequential Irish town like Ardnakelty. There were no sudden twists in the tail or shocking revelations but the steady slow pace of the unfolding story was perfectly matched to the dawning realisation of what actually happened and who did it.

Intense and atmospheric
